The ultimate road trip down south

Discover the best of Australia’s South West on a great self-drive journey. It can take you a couple of days or better still a couple of weeks, but here is an eight day suggested journey to get you started.

Drive to Australia's South WestDay 1 : Perth – Geographe region

Head south along the South Western Hwy and visit the quaint country town of Harvey. Enjoy a walk through the magnifi cent jarrah and marri forests in Collie’s Wellington National Park and explore the cellar doors and boutique breweries of the Ferguson Valley, Dardanup. Experience the friendly wild dolphins of Bunbury and enjoy shopping, followed by a beer or cappuccino in this cosmopolitan city. Have fun picking fruit near Donnybrook (in season). 

Day 2/3 : Geographe region -  Margaret River Wine Region

Visit the newly re-opened Busselton Jetty, catch the train or walk to the end, and see amazing marine life at the Underwater Observatory. Enjoy a swim, snorkel or kayak in the crystal clear waters of the north facing Geographe Bay. Visit Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and walk part of the Cape to Cape track. See whales (in season) from the
shore or see them up close on a cruise from Dunsborough or Augusta. Experience the magic of the underworld at one of the six limestone caves open to the public and get lost in one of the fun mazes! Enjoy Margaret River’s world famous wines. Sit back and let someone else do the driving on a guided wine tour - a long winery lunch is a must.
There are wonderful cheeses, olive oils, chocolate, fudge, boutique beer, natural soaps, art galleries, boutique shopping and more. If you’re keen to catch the ultimate wave, get the surfboard out or if you’re a beginner, take a lesson from a surfing instructor. Join the locals at Prevelly beach for a picnic and watch the sun go down. Enjoy
scenic drives through the amazing Boranup Forest – don’t forget the camera! Visit Cape Leeuwin, the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia where the Indian and Southern oceans meet. Enjoy delicious fish and chips on the Blackwood River in Augusta.

Day 4 : Margaret River Wine Region - Blackwood River Valley

Drive inland to Nannup known as the ‘Garden Village’. Take some of the most scenic drives in the region through rolling hills and valleys to Bridgetown and Balingup. Enjoy Balingup’s colourful shops where you can browse for handcrafted pottery, herbal products, arts and crafts. Enjoy a picnic or canoe along the Blackwood River in Bridgetown. Visit Boyup Brook, the ‘Country Music’ capital of WA and check out the mysterious street art.

Day 5/6 : Blackwood River Valley - Southern Forests

Hunt for the highly sought after rare black truffle and visit the Manjimup Timber and Heritage Park. For a challenge, tackle one of the gigantic climbing trees in Pemberton and Manjimup. Sit back and enjoy the scenery and wildlife on a cruise along the tranquil Donnelly River. Take a 4WD tour and discover the huge land-locked Yeagerup Dunes near Pemberton. Enjoy a hike or mountain bike ride and be dwarfed by some of the world’s tallest trees – the karri. Walk the suspension bridge over Beedelup Falls and take a tram to through the forest to the Cascades. Visit
art and furniture galleries in Pemberton to see magnifi cent timbers handcrafted into masterpieces. Enjoy the scenic wine touring and be sure to try marron and truffl e for lunch at a winery restaurant. View world class outdoor
sculptures at the forest art trail in Northcliff e. Explore Walpole and the Walpole Wilderness area, where you can walk through enormous trees and have a picnic at Circular Pool.

Day 7/8 : Southern Forests – Great Southern

Travel east towards Denmark and walk amongst the tingle tree tops at the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk. Head to Conspicuous Cliff s for a picnic or go for a swim in the calm waters of Greens Pool at William Bay National Park. Visit the picturesque town of Denmark and enjoy a winery lunch over a glass of one of Denmark’s highly acclaimed wines. Take a walk along the Bibbulmun Track or relax with a guided tour. Explore the charm of Albany and its rugged coastline. Visit Torndirrup National Park and be amazed by The Gap and Natural Bridge. Spend a few hours exploring Whale World and don’t miss a trip to the squeaky white sand at Little Beach and Two Peoples
Bay Nature Reserve. Be sure to indulge in some of the region’s delicious produce such as marron and oysters and try gorgeous sandalwood body products. For something different, sample diff erent spirits and liqueurs at a distillery. During the months of June to October, enjoy an exciting whale watching cruise*. Head 40 minutes north of Albany to Porongurup National Park to check out the unusual rock formations. Drive through the heart of the magnifi cent Stirling Range National Park. Climb Bluff Knoll or other walking trails and witness the beautiful wildflowers (in season) during your visit to the Great Southern make sure taste a variety of outstanding wines from various climatic
conditions. Explore the country towns of Mount Barker, Cranbrook and Katanning. Be sure to visit Kodja Place in Kojonup to learn about indigenous heritage and culture.

*Extend your journey east with a trip to Bremer Bay and the Fitzgerald River National Park for white sandy beaches, a whale nursery, winery and one of the richest  ora regions in Western Australia with up to 1900 plant species.
