The Great Southern Development Commission (GSDC) is a WA Government agency with offices in Albany and Katanning. The GSDC's role is to coordinate and promote the economic and social development of the Great Southern region. The GSDC works with a range of stakeholders to develop the Great Southern’s tourism sector. The Commission’s focus is on the joint funding of marketing, product development and research associated with future private and public sector investment in regional assets.
Life is enjoyable and exciting in the dynamic Great Southern. Forests, national parks and beaches are accessible to all. Fish abound in the Southern Ocean, and visitors can have a close encounter with migrating whales that visit the coast in winter and spring. Two world-class trails extend into Albany from Perth: the Bibbulmun Track walk trail and the Munda Biddi Trail for off-road cyclists. Each can be accessed for short day trips or can be followed for an epic 1000km journey. Arts and entertainment are thriving, and the region regularly hosts international festivals and world class exhibitions. Albany’s weekend markets are highly regarded for the choice and quality of produce, all presented by regional growers. The Great Southern is a recognised producer of quality cool-climate wines and there is a fine selection of restaurants and food outlets for all dining preferences.
