Blackwood Valley Wine Region
The Blackwood Valley Wine Region covers the rolling hills around the towns of Balingup, Nannup, Bridgetown and Boyup Brook. The region is characterised by the Blackwood River, which is the longest continually flowing river in Western Australia.
On the same latitude as Margaret River, but further inland, the Blackwood Valley Wine Region has cooler winters and slightly warmer summers. Since settlement in the late 1800s the region's income has been derived from wool, cereal crops, mixed farming, timber and horticulture. Today, its wines are a valuable addition to the region's economy. The first vineyards in the region were established in 1976 and the area is now home to over 50 vineyards, many with cellar doors.
A strong characteristic of the region is the capacity to fully ripen fruit, and its Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling have received numerous awards. Other varieties are also showing great potential.
