Canoeing, Kayaking and Rafting

The waterways of Australia's South West wind their way through pristine national parks and magnificent karri forests, and there are many ways to explore them. In summer you can float lazily down the river in a canoe or paddle a kayak into secluded coves, while winter offers the thrills and spills of riding white water rapids on a raft. Check with the local visitor centre for tour operators.

To ensure you enjoy the region’s waterways without impacting on the natural environment, see Leave No Trace Australia for helpful hints and tips.

Blackwood River

The longest of all the waterways in Australia's South West, the Blackwood River meanders slowly through Boyanup Brook, Bridgetown and Nannup to Augusta, where it meets the Indian and Southern Oceans. A paddle down the Blackwood is a great way to experience the area's lush green forests and unique birdlife.

Deep River

Running through spectacular state forest and the pristine Mt Frankland National Park, Deep River is home to a wide range of plant and animal life. The upper section of the river features a series of broad pools separated by rapids, making it a popular spot for canoeing.

Frankland River

Head to Walpole where you can canoe along the Frankland River through national reserves and dense woodlands. Look out for an abundance of native flora and fauna along the banks as you silently glide along.

Gordon River

A tributary of the Frankland River, Gordon River passes through some of the South West's most picturesque scenery and is perfect for canoeing, kayaking and fishing.

Collie River

The Collie River is dam controlled, and the section at the base of the Wellington Dam creates an exhilarating white water rafting challenge. Further down the river, the pace is slower - perfect for a gentle paddle in a canoe through the forests of Collie National Park.
