Harvey

Harvey lies in the heart of dairy country. This small town is surrounded by green pastures and in spring comes alive with colour as wildflowers cover the ground. Harvey has also developed a fine reputation for its high quality orange juice, beef and increasingly its wine. Citrus orchards and viticulture flourish around the town.  Harvey’s intensive dairy farming provides the bulk of Western Australia’s milk supply.

The town derives its name from the nearby Harvey River, named by Governor Stirling in 1829, Although not positively known, it is most likely named after Rear Admiral Sir John Harvey RN.

Visitors can explore golden beaches, stunning jarrah forests in the Harvey region, with the beachside communities of Binningup and Myalup offering excellent swimming and fishing. The Harvey Dam is a scenic spot and has an amphitheatre, boardwalk and walking trails, playground, barbecue facilities and a boat launch area.  Nearby is the Bibbulmun Track, a world class 1000 kilometre walking trail.

Harvey was home to renowned children’s author May Gibbs, creator of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, and the town features a replica of the 1880’s home where she lived, called Stirling's Cottage.

Harvey boasts unique mosaics and murals, the Big Orange tower, locally made cheese, award winning wines, the Internment Camp Memorial Shrine and an abundance of history.

North of Harvey the Yarloop Museum and Steam Workshops offer an insight into the history of the area.
