Top 10 places in the Albany Region

Albany is such a beautiful place, I’ve lived in Albany for 25 years, guess that means I’m almost a local. Having HideAway Haven, a hosted accommodation in Albany; Becki and I have the opportunity to send people to Albany’s most popular spots and local’s secret locations. To sum it all up for our guests, my favourite places are pooled together on Albany Region, a photographic and visitor information site.

This is my top 10 favourite places to guide your time in Albany. Although you really need to stay here for at least 25 years to see all of our regions beauty.

#1  Little Beach

Little Beach is a picturesque perfect, magical beach in Western Australia.  With a combination of white sand, azure water, granite headlands & greenery, it easily surpasses some of the famous beaches around the world. You can find Little Beach and Waterfall Beach beneath Mount Gardner on Two People's Bay Northern Headland. Little Beach was voted #5 of AUSTRALIA`S TOP SECRET SPOTS in 2014.

A stunning lookout over the Great Southern Ocean and our beautiful rugged coastline.  I love sitting at the lookout and watch the sun go down after another glorious day in the Albany Region. [ Image Skyprints ]

#3  Sand Patch

506 stairs from the top to the bottom, an awesome workout.  I love wandering under the huge wind turbines where 80% of Albany’s energy comes from. [Images Skyprints]

#4  Albany Heritage Park

Overlooking the Atatürk Channel and offering breathtaking views of King George Sound, where the original Convoy ships were anchored. There are numerous marked walking tracks throughout the stunning Heritage Park. Large gum trees line the Avenue of Honour on Apex Drive and at the base of each tree is the name of a soldier lost at war. [Image Steve K Photography]

#5  Middleton Beach

Middleton Beach has a jetty, and in summer a pontoon (a floating construction that can hold many swimmers) is placed in the ocean for delight and fun of swimmers. Nearby you can find Three Anchors which is a restaurant/bar/kiosk and art gallery. A venue to chill with on tap beer and good food whilst watching the waves roll in. [Image Skyprints]

#6  Bayonet Head Nature Trail

Bayonet Head has large areas of native bushland along Yakamia Creek. Several reserves, including the Bayonet Head Lookout, offer recreational and picnic facilities.  It is a beautiful hike along a nature trail while enjoying native birds and wildflowers.

#7  Ledge Beach / Gull Rock

I love walking along this stretch of beach leaving footprints in the sand.  This beach is deserted most of the time. Time for solitude. [Image Becki Shaver]

#8  Salmon Holes

Salmon Holes in the Torndirrup National Park is a spot not to be missed. Walk down the stairs and let the sand squelch between your toes. Watch the crashing waves, but be aware of the signs. I love the look on the fishermen’s faces as they reel in a Salmon. [Image Becki Shaver]

#9  Mount Martin

Mt Martin Botanical Reserve provides a beautiful coastal setting for recreation and enjoyment of natural beauty. A 5 km hike offers high vista points in the landscape and outstanding views of Breaksea and Michaelmas islands, Albany’s harbours and Torndirrup Peninsula. Another beautiful spot to hike, breathe and take in the beauty that is Albany Region.

#10  Castle Rock / Granite Skywalk

Start at picnic area at eastern end of ranges. Head up steep hill through Karri trees. Descend before climbing next hill to Balancing Rock. Here is a wonderful photo opportunity. The next part is not easy. Climb over rocks, through a crevice, up a ladder then along the Granite Skywalk to the summit for magnificent views. It’s hard work but worth it.
