Winter on The Amazing South Coast is a magical time, with striking sunsets, playful whales and cosy comfort food & wine from local producers. Luckily, there is a way to experience it all in one convenient package.
The Albany Fly+Drive Winter Whales Mini-Break is the perfect getaway encompassing natural wonders, whale-watching and delicious, seasonal and local produce.
On the first day, your winter escape starts when you check in to Terminal 2 with REX at Perth Domestic Airport and enjoy sweeping views of the port-side city upon landing in the Albany. From here, you will collect your booked vehicle at the AVIS desk at Albany Airport and make your way into the historical city, where you will receive a warm welcome from the staff at The Ace. Your first evening will be a relaxing one, spent in a cosy environment with a complimentary bottle of local Silverstream classic white wine. Cheers to that!
Start your second day with a delicious coffee and breakfast at Ryan's Restaurant to fuel you for the day of adventure ahead. With the freedom of self-driving, you can explore all that The Amazing South Coast has to offer.
Why not drop into the Albany Visitor Centre to pick up your Amazing South Coast Pass, an optional extra for the trip? This is a great opportunity to try out the VR headsets at the Visitor Centre. From there, make your way down to the Albany Waterfront Marina where you will meet your Ocean Safari guide and step on board the premium 60FT Conquest vessel Dhu Force for an up-close whale-watching adventure. With multiple viewing areas on board, this is for a once-in-a lifetime-experience, so be sure to bring your camera. While on deck, listen to a live commentary about the wildlife that frolics in the region, as well as some fascinating stories of the whaling that used to occur.
Next, you're free to choose how you'd like to spend the rest of the day. We recommend you experience the other Amazing attractions, including Albany's Historic Whaling Station, where you can enjoy a guided tour of the only whaling station in the world open to tourists. Then, immerse yourself in the ANZAC legend at the National Anzac Centre, and follow the personal stories of the ANZACs through state-of-the-art technology, multimedia and historic artefacts.
On your third day, indulge in another scrumptious breakfast at Ryan’s Restaurant before you check out of The Ace and make your way over to the Valley of the Giants, a world famous Tree Top Walk suspended 40 metres high in the canopy of the ancient tingle forest. After stretching your legs during the fresh walk through the luscious tree tops, it will be time to make your way back to Albany Airport, detouring via some of the quaint wineries along the way.
