Welcome to the Featured Woodcraft Gallery and Museum
A lifetime of working with wood and a passion for collecting has resulted in the creation of the Featured Wood Gallery and Museum in Australind.
The museum is a labour of love for owner John Ablett, who has spent more than 35 years gathering an eclectic collection of antique, heritage and other collectibles from Australia and around the world.
Featured Woodcraft
Visitors love our new Gallery which showcases a wide variety of craft and furniture pieces made on the premises or by local artisans.
There is also a range of art work in different mediums by artists from the region.
Tourists love the small, unique craft items to take home and remind them of this magnificent part of Australia. Locals love to shop here to buy original, hand made objects as special gifts.
We make our furniture on site with locally sourced jarrah, marri, sheoak and other varieties of timber including tables of varying sizes, tv cabinets, bed heads, wine racks, CD/DVD racks, mirrors and clocks.
Museum
The Museum (which gets a WOW on entry) focuses on Australian and American History and has to be seen to be believed! The Museum is set up like a movie set with larger than life dioramas of Ned Kelly, Gallipoli, American Indians and gun battles!
The museum exhibits – arranged in a tableau style – are built around seven themes, starting with the Ablett family’s woodworking heritage.
Local Noongars have provided input and advice on a large Aboriginal display depicting their 50,000 year old culture in the region.
The diorama on Ned Kelly and his gang, Australia’s best known bushrangers, features a replica of Ned’s famous steel armour which visitors are invited to try on!
The old Bunbury Jetty exhibit rounds out the experience. The Jetty played a major part in exporting timber and wool around the world.
FURNITURE
Our furniture is handcrafted using beautiful native West Australian timbers.
We have a world wide reputation for our workmanship and design. We hand craft furniture such as coffee tables, dining tables, entertainment units, side boards, wall units, mirrors etc.
WOOD CARVINGS
We can design for you a real unique piece to give as a gift using creative wood carving. As a wood carver for many years, John has learnt to “read the wood” to make sure he can use all of the wood available per carving.
WOODEN GUNS
This unique collection of handcrafted wooden guns is world class, with moving parts all made from timber. All wooden guns are from the 1850s to the 1900s era.
WOOD TURNING
After many years as a carpenter and joiner, John “turned” his love of forest floor timbers and storm damage trees into use for all works of art in this wood turning section.
